Each student was given a unique city in the U.S. and prompted to design a building that responds to its climate and any environmental risks (earthquake, hurricane, etc).
The building requirements include the following uses: underground parking structure, ground floor retail, lobby and service spaces, five floors of residential apartments, and a rooftop urban-farming greenhouse. Amenity spaces are unique to each project. This project implements deep-winter greenhouse (DWG) massing concepts to minimize total greenhouse volume and minimize heat loss through north-facing walls. The amenity features multi-level spaces that integrate stair circulation and a shaded terrace.
The workflow of the project was a step-by-step process applying weekly lessons in first-principle design-engineering topics (architecture, climate, gravity-structural design, lateral-structural design, mechanical systems.) Models were made in Rhino and Revit.
